LG Infinia 55LW5600

LG Infinia 55LW5600 55-Inch Cinema 3D 1080p 120 Hz LED-LCD HDTV with Smart TV and Four Pairs of 3D Glasses

Sporting a slim profile in the glossy black build, the LG Infinia 55LW5600 certainly looks staid compared to the eye-catching beauty of its cousins in the LX9500 series. The HDTV is perched atop a low-rise swivel stand with shiny rectangular base with only the transparent edging on the 1.5-inch bezels and the unilluminated LG logo at the bottom frame as highlights – a minimalist look with understated chic that should perfectly suit modern homes.

Like other 2011 LG releases, two remotes are shipped with the LG Infinia 55LW5600: the standard remote with well-placed, illuminated keys and the Wii-like motion controller. The wand-like controller has been upgraded to seamlessly access and control more menu items and apps (except Netflix), although there is still room for improvement to make motion control much more efficient. Both remotes work well with the fresh LG menu designed for Smart TV capable HDTVs that features a webpage-like interface.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The LG Infinia 55LW560 renders black levels that are relatively much darker than standard LCDs, although a shade brighter compared to plasmas. The deep blacks and excellent near black areas, fairly accurate colors, and excellent hue saturation combine perfectly to produce crisp and vivid images that are rendered uniformly across the screen. There are some blooming effects and artifacts noted especially on bright objects with dark backgrounds, and picture clarity suffers quickly on off angle viewing, but the unit’s ability to filter out external reflections quite well is certainly a plus point.

This Infinia uses passive technology for 3D, which makes the picture quality a tad inferior to active 3D in side by side comparisons. But the pictures in this 3DTV are nonetheless perky and bright, and donning less-intrusive and more comfortable eyewear (particularly for extended viewing) would surely offset for the subpar images. Moreover, it is the 2D that is the LG Infinia 55LW5600’s strongest point: it handles full 1080p/24 materials excellently with minimal artifacts.

The features for this 3DTVs and the step-up and higher priced LW6500 are much the same, including LG’s Smart TV portal that offers most of the big-name streaming content providers with the notable exception of Pandora – in a misnamed Premium suite which require no additional fees beyond the subscription payments. The unit also has a browser that works quite well with social networking sites, although it has no Flash for viewing videos. ( Read more... )
